Large-Diameter Reducing Joint — Field Repair Under Live Pressure

Large-Diameter Reducing Joint — Field Repair Under Live Pressure
The leaking joint, exposed with the trench open around it.

Large-diameter joints are usually the hardest leaks to schedule: the pipe cannot simply be drained and cut out without isolating a whole district. This joint was leaking with the trench already open and water present, so the repair had to be a wrap applied from the outside.

The clamp is assembled over the joint on site.

The clamp is delivered as segments, assembled around the pipe in the trench and closed with bolts. Because nothing is welded and nothing is cut, the working window is limited only by how long the excavation can stay open.

Large-Diameter Reducing Joint — Field Repair Under Live Pressure
The wrap is closed and bolted; the joint is sealed and ready for backfill.

Once the bolts were torqued the joint held at line pressure. The main was never taken out of service, which is the whole point of a mechanical repair on a large-diameter line — the cost of a shutdown is measured in customers, not in hours.
